# Reducing Corona Effect

In previous post, we took a little intro about corona effect and the causes of it. Now we are going to discuss about reducing corona effect and pros and cons of corona effect.

## Pros and Cons of Corona:

• Due to corona, the air around the conductor becomes conducting. Hence the effective conductor size is increased. Increased size will reduce the electrostatic stress on conductor.
• Transients in transmission lines, due to surges will be reduced by the corona effect.

• Because of ionization, power losses are there which results in reduction in transmission efficiency.
• Current drawn by corona is not sinusoidal. Therefore, overall power quality of power system is reduced. This non-sinusoidal voltage drop will result in inductive interference with communication lines.
• Ozone is produced which may cause corrosion.

## Reducing Corona Effect:

As the potential gradient is given by:
$$g = \frac{V}{r \times log_c \frac{d}{r}}$$
So, we can reduce corona effect by:

• Increasing Conductor Size: increasing the conductor size will increase the potential require for ionization. Hence corona is reduced.
• Increasing Spacing between Conductors: Similarly, increasing the spacing between conductors will increase the the potential require for corona formation. Therefore, the corona is reduced.

Both the reduction measures are taken within limits according to economical perspective. Increasing the conductor size will increase weight of conductor. Similarly, increasing the spacing between conductor will require more space.
In both cases, the supporting tower should be more strong and become expensive. So, optimization is done for keeping the corona in limit and power quality maintained.
